Why Supplement With Resveratrol

We know that not all foods and supplements receive the same share of the spotlight, attention, or scrutiny. In spite of the ample scientific research, one of the most overlooked is resveratrol. Resveratrol, most commonly associated with red wine, has many benefits that may not only help you in your next trip to the gym, but could also enhance your opportunity to age more gracefully.

WHAT IS RESVERATROL?

Chemical structure of trans-resveratrol

According to Wikipedia, Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a stilbenoid, a type of natural phenol, and a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants in response to injury or when the plant is under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Food sources of resveratrol include the skin of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and mulberries.

Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and certain substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and protecting against artery damage.

While the news about red wine might sound great if you enjoy a glass of red wine with your evening meal, doctors are wary of encouraging anyone to start drinking alcohol. That’s because too much alcohol can have many harmful effects on your body.  Also, drinking alcohol is also not allowed for certain religions.

Still, many doctors agree that something in red wine appears to help your heart. It’s possible that antioxidants, such as flavonoids or a substance called resveratrol, have heart-healthy benefits.

WHY SUPPLEMENT WITH RESVERATROL?

1. ENDURANCE ENHANCEMENT

According to a 2012 Canadian study, resveratrol supplementation could provide similar skeletal muscle benefits as endurance training. The study, conducted over a 12-week period on rats, found that resveratrol supplementation also resulted in an increase of endurance, oxidative metabolism, and enhanced cardiac function. The combination of endurance training with resveratrol supplementation has resulted in a performance increase of 21%.

A Canadian study found that by drinking one to two 5-ounce glasses of wine per day, study participants were able to significantly reduce their risk of developing heart disease and stroke, and subsequently also reduce their risk of death by roughly 30%. It was found that resveratrol preconditions your heart thus providing it with the best protection to avoid cardiac events.

4. CANCER PROTECTION

A recent study conducted in France concluded that resveratrol was able to slow down the production of cancerous cells and therefore could be considered an effective anticancer agent.  Dr. William Li, a cancer researcher spent 26 years of researching on “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” His answer? Resveratrol cutting the blood vessels that feeding the cancer cells – killing the source for cancer. He presents a new way to think about treating cancer and other diseases during a TED talk using anti-angiogenesis –  preventing the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor. The crucial first (and best) step: Eating cancer-fighting foods that cut off the supply lines and beat cancer at its own game.  The talk ” Can we eat to starve cancer?”  was filmed in February 2010. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, leading to chain reactions that may damage our body cells. Antioxidants such as thiols or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) terminate these chain reactions.  Resveratrol is considered as a supplement antioxidant.  It helps to prevent damage to our body cells.  Watch the Jeunesse Longevity video on this Antioxidant.
